So I took a little unplanned hiatus from my blog over the holidays. If I'm being honest with you, which is the whole point of starting this blog in the first place, I haven't been completely happy with the direction it was going. I wanted to take a pause and re-evaluate. I also have a tendency to not want to do anything at all unless it's absolutely perfect. On more than one occasion I thought about throwing in the towel. I could think of a million excuses, top of the list being I'm too freaking busy for this. But at the same time, it has become an important outlet for me. I've always enjoyed writing. When I was a kid, I used to write little mini stories and exchange them with my best friend, cousin, and penpal Graci. I was obsessed with dogs and wolves and loved stories of independent kids like The Boxcar Children, Julie of the Wolves, and the young adult survival classic The Hatchet, so most of my stories echoed those themes. When I was 10, I was sure that I would complete my first novel and started a little binder of all my characters and story lines. I had gracious teachers in my early education like Mrs. Welbourn that allowed me to extend deadlines to finish my assigned story projects. I was not a young "gift and talented" writer by any means, I just loved doing it.
All that to say, I need this blog. I need to be able to put my thoughts on paper, or on screen as the case may be. Between my demanding job with our family's restaurants, being a mom, being a wife, being a homeowner, and just, you know, living life I feel pulled in at least ten directions at any given minute. Writing helps me calm the noise in my brain and clarify my priorities. And by sharing these thoughts with you, my dear readers, I hope that maybe I can help someone else out there by just letting them know that they're not alone in these challenges and adventures.
Anyways... I hope you like the new look of my site. My word for 2015 was simplify, and I hope to carry that into 2016 starting with this space. It's not perfect yet, but I'm hoping to let go of that expectation and just enjoy it for a while. I'll be focusing more on topics relative to being a working mom, sharing some recipes, and sprinkling in some industry advice and stories. Let me know what you think!
Oh, I also got a new haircut :-)
